Santa Barbara's
Church (Boticas): |
| |
|
| |
Santa
Barbara's Church is an example of formal church
architecture and used to be the Parish church.
The biggest highlight is a wooden
pelican that one can find in the sacristy. People
here say the bird pecked a gash in its own breast to
feed the baby birds with its blood. In this way, the
pelican represented Our Lord, who gave His blood
for the people.
You can pick up a car at our Portos
office, and get to the region of Botica quite
easily. |

Passeio Alegre
Garden (Porto): |
|
| |
|
|
| |
A
masterpiece 20 years in the building, it was designed
by Emílio David. The palm tree lane, where sometimes
the wind takes a walk, is blessed by natural beauty.
The Passeio Alegre Garden has its
own personality. Plane trees cohabit peacefully with
the disorder of the palm trees that wave with the sensual
sea breeze. The araucarias, all "dressed up",
are a daily a festival of beauty.
It is a garden of extreme splendour and
beauty, calmly accepting the ocean's ebb and flow beside it.
After picking up your car at our Portos
office, you can easily reach these beautiful gardens. |

Walls from the
17th century (Elvas): |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The
17th century walls which surround Elvas are
impressive monuments to the old builders who managed
such size and produced such stability.
The walls were provided with three great
gates, named Esquina, Olivença and S. Vicente. They
used to be locked at midnight and opened at dawn, but in the
fifties, with a view to improving communications between the
old town and new settlements outside the walls, a viaduct
was built and an opening made in the wall.
Our Lisbon
Office, will provide you with a car, and directions for
getting to Elvas, which is about 200 km to the East, through
fascinating countryside. |

Cruz de Portugal
- Portugal's Cross (Silves): |
|
| |
|
|
| |
To the east of the
city of Silves, on the way to Enxerim, one can
find the enigmatic and beautiful Cruz de Portugal.
This very beautiful cross most likely dates
back to the late 15th or early 16th century and was
sculpted from white limestone. The style appears to be "florid
Gothic", although some contend that the cross is decorated
with Manueline motifs and symbols.
This ancient relic has been classified as
a national monument since 1910. It stands about three
meters in height, and the minutely detailed sculpturing shows
Christ crucified on one side, and in the arms of His
mother on the other. You can reach the cross by getting
a car from our Monchique
office. |

Belém Tower (Lisbon): |
|

the city was needed), in tribute to the patron saint of the
city, S. Vicente. Its was completed
in 1520 and, in honor of the King, features Manueline symbols
on its visible foundations with elegant knots, armillary spheres,
Military Order of Christ's crosses and natural objects.
Of these is an example of the first rhinoceros
made of stone in all Europe.
The Belém Tower is a symbol of the
country's long relationships with other cultures and civilisations.
It has statutory standing as a "Guardian
of Portuguese Individuality and Universality", a status confirmed
when UNESCO classified it "Cultural Patrimony of all
Humanity", in 1983.
