Car hire and rental for a stay in the quiet.
In this quietest, and in some ways
prettiest of Portugese towns, you get a little sniff of what
it must have been like before the days of 747s and mass travel.
Beautiful. So hire a car, stay in Monchique, and travel
about . . . but do it quietly, this is too nice to spoil.
Walking tours round Monchique
The Monchique Bio-Park Network has
been designed to offer a series of mapped and marked routes that
allow you to get out and about in an otherwise difficult terrain.
It is absolutely ideal countryside for walking,
cycling and horse riding. If you are in reasonably good health
and take some form of exercise at home, you should be capable
of taking on most of the bio-park routes. Yellow routes are walking
paths, green are for horse and bicycle.
Good footwear is a must, as you need
to careful on the loose, rocky, rutted paths. Plenty of water
and protection from the sun are also part of the secret of surviving
in the Serra de Monchique. Time your trips to rest in the
heat of the day. Wear a hat, and protect skin unaccustomed to
Mediterranean sun with a good sun block and loose clothing
(especially for children). Dehydration can set in quickly,
so carry a litre or two of bottled or spring water with you to
keep up a liquid intake of 3 to 5 litres a day, depending on your
activity. Restaurants, shops and cafes exist on every route,
so you can choose how to top up on you calorie count. Routes can
pass close to farmhouses, where barking farm dogs can be
noisy but won't bite. Don't be deterred, its mainly noise.
Make friends or scare them off.
