Getting to know Lisbon
The city spreads out over a series
of hills, with cobbled foot paths that make walking a tiresome
business. While the cobbled streets are very impressive,
the footpaths are truly wonderful. They are made of small stones
inlaid in beautiful patterns. To lay a footpath the workers
use a series of templates. They will sit for hours on the ground,
piecing the stones into place, using the template to keep the
pattern.
You can get around the city very well
by car, cab, foot, metro, or one of the trams. Stay off the
metro (tube) at night, as there are pickpockets. However,
during the day, the metro offers a convenient way riound the city's
attractions.
Orient station was developed for
Expo 98 and is now the destination for Parque das Nações.
Even the stations along this new route are beautiful, and the
station at Oriental is another story, so is the Parque. It contains
many things for the whole family to enjoy, including an Oceanarium.
