Getting to know Lagos

Lagos, is renowned for its beautiful beaches that lie in coves beneath the cliff edge. To reach these inlets steep winding steps will take you down to beach level.

Lagos houses the Museu Regional de Lagos (Museum) which contains some fascinating ancient relics. You will also find some Roman mosaics, which were found in the Budens region of the Algarve.

In the main square you will see a statue of King Sebastion, who was killed along with his followers in the 16th century. Most of Lagos was devastated by the Great Earthquake in 1755, but the beautiful church ‘Igreja de San Antonio’survuived, and is worth a visit. Here you will see ornate gilt, sculptured warriors and cherubs supporting columns of angels. The Altar is carved from wood and the lower parts of the wall are covered in 18th century tiles.

The main square also has little shops that sell brass and copper work, pewter and marble and other handicrafts. There are restaurants and cafes, with tables and chairs outside. They often cook sardines on charcoal burners, outside.
