Sleepy monastery town as it is, Braganca
comes alive for festival times at the many holy
sites located in its catchment area. That's when a car comes
into its own, because there are a million things to see,
and a little distance to be travelled between them..
Using a car round Braga, Braganca and the North
Portugal . . . great golf, great beaches,
great architecture, breathtaking scenery and breathakingly
bad drivers, be warned.

them at once, by road.
If you want to use a car, hire one of
ours, don't take your own. The bureaucracy in licence plate
permits, insurance premiums and the like is not worth the trouble.
And the accident rate is horrendous, so minor bingles can end

to be true, though.
Braganca sight seeing
The old city and its fortifications:
Place of the cathedral (Praça da Sé), and Combatentes da Grande
Guerra, a commercial street,rather pleasant. At the end of this
street, is the pretty Largo (broad, or common) of São Vicente
and the Igreja (church) de São Vicente. Then continue to
the castle via Rua Trindade Coelho. This small paved street provides
a pleasant, but not altogether restful climb to the castle.
In old city which you will there is a sense
of the medieval ways that still preside. Of course, many
places in Portugal have something of that feel, but few
so richly preserve a real living atmosphere as does Braganca
old town.
Skirt the high street until you come to
the fortress. There is a pelou rinho (pillory) there to
point out to children, as to the rewards of misbehaviour (in the
past, of course). Its base is a sculpture of a wild boar, which
may be prehistoric.
