Braga has the same fizz about it
as Barcelona, and Milan. It's that Northern something, that when
mixed with the mediterranean South, makes things happen really
well. Braga car rental is no different. You'll get the
efficiency, crisp sercice and delivery you would expect from any
other more Northen European destination.
Driving round the North of Portugal
Condition and maintenance of rural roads
varies greatly, so be alert for poorly marked construction sites,
animal obstructions, animal-drawn carts and slow-moving
road repair/agricultural machinery. Driving can be difficult
due to drivers speeding, narrow cobblestone streets, blind
curves, unprotected embankments, and herds of cows on the
roads.
Night Travel
In the Northern provinces, road
conditions can be especially difficult in winter. In
mountainous regions of the Beiras provinces and along Portugal’s
border with Spain, winters are harsh which can make roads like
the IP4, between Oporto and Bragança especially dangerous in winter.
Routes through Sera da Estrela may close due to snow.
Remember, in Portugal half of all fatalities
occur between Friday evening and Sunday morning. The accident
rate is especially high in July and August.
Touring the North by car ( and foot, and boat,
and ...)
The Duoro Valley is the jewel of
the North. One of Portugal's scenic highlights, the valley
stretches across 100 miles of bold, expansive panoramas
from the city of Porto all the way to the Spanish border.
In the upper reaches of the Duoro River,
port-wine vineyards wrap around every crew-cut hillside, and wrap
round the walls of the odd, white manor house. Roads along
its banks can be crowded with day-trippers from Porto,
but the Duoro now has five dams and is navigable for its length.
This makes boat cruises an attractive way to soak up the
atmosphere in peace.
